ISU USA Elections Ballot

All,
After an extended nominations period, we have received platforms from four people for four different positions. At this time the only position in contention is President, for which we have received two platforms.
As the positions of Vice President, Treasurer, and Director of IT are uncontested, the only position we will be voting for is President.

Platforms received for each position:

President:

Joshua Nelson:

My primary goal as President of the ISU USA Alumni Association for the last term was to improve how ISU interacts with alumni and increase the networking opportunities available to alumni not only in the United States, but around the world. Towards these ends I ran the following initiatives:

1) Taking control of the ISU Alumni Weekend and revitalizing it into the ISU Alumni Conference, a more professional event focused on a balance of professional, networking and social activities.

2) Supporting ISU USA alumni during the SSP and Masters program with welcome letters, advice and feedback for the program, culture nights, encouraging them to get involved upon graduation, etc..

3) Helping find ISU USA alumni to assist Steve Brody in manning the ISU booth at space conference around the US including the ISDC, New Space, and SEDS conferences.

4) Hosting ISU gatherings at popular conferences in the US such as the Space Symposium.

5) Thanks to a generous donation by an alumnus, last year ISU USA produced custom ISU patches for the SSP participants and alumni who attended the Alumni Conference in Montreal, Canada.

With an improvement in alumni relations at the global level, we need to begin focusing more on alumni activities at home. Recently we have had difficulty getting alumni involved in the Board of Directors. The past two terms have seen a maximum of 2 people run for 4 positions. This situation is untenable and the focus for the future needs to be on involving more alumni in the association.

To remedy this situation I will be proposing the following activities during the next term:

1) Holding an in-person meeting of the ISU USA alumni association at the annual Alumni Conference in Athens, Ohio to discuss the future direction of the alumni association.

2) Updating the ISU USA bylaws which have not been altered since Sept 2000 and do not reflect modern technology

3) Incentive programs to encourage alumni to update their contact information in the ISU-USA alumni database. I am producing a set of ISU patches at my own expense, and I would like to send out a free ISU patch to every alumnus who updates their information on the website and joins the listserv / LinkedIn group.

4) Reviving the Regional Contacts program where at least one alumni in each of the core geographic areas (ex: DC, LA, San Fran, Boston, KSC, etc..) volunteer to be the regional ISU contact and host at least one ISU Alumni get together a year.

5) An annual feedback survey asking alumni for their opinions on the alumni organization

6) With the assistance of Steve Brody, greatly increasing the number of employers present at the Alumni Conference Career fair this summer in Athens, Ohio.

I hope each and every one of you will get involved with the Alumni Association in some capacity, be it by serving on the Board, gathering alumni for a meet up or attending alumni events in the US.

Clear skies,

Joshua Nelson

Gary Gilbert:

My name is Gary Gilbert and I am a 2012 graduate of the In residence Masters program at  ISU.

As members of my class know, my attendance at ISU was a result of keeping a goal alive for over 22 years. I originally discovered ISU in 1988 and decided that I wanted to attend the masters program when it became available several years later. I actually was accepted in the class of 2001 after retiring from a career in logistics in the U.S Navy. I was not able to attend at that time but continued to work towards my goal and attended 10 years later.

I am the incumbent Vice president and I seek support from the ISU-USA alums to be President.

ISU has a job center but I believe that it is not being used to its fullest potential. The number of opportunities posted should be greatly increased and I will make it a priority to contact the various companies as well as alums working at these different companies and ask them to encourage their employers to post their opportunities on the ISU job center.

Treasurer:

Chris Johnson:

I'm looking forward to helping the ISU USA Alumni Association, and hereby offer my services as Treasurer. Our tax-exempt 501c3 status has apparently lapsed and which we need to renew it. As treasurer, it would be my duty to initiate and complete this process, as well as keep our President and Vice-President briefed on our status. It would also be by duty to maintain the customary financial information relevant to the organization, such as preparing and delivering regular financial reports, regulatory filings, and confirming contributions. I am a lawyer by training and profession, and have taken accounting classes adequate to serve as our Treasurer.

Director for Information Technologies and Communications:

Erik Franks:

I'd like to help ISU USA maintain and upgrade the IT and communications of the organization. I have served these roles previously as an entrepreneur and currently as IT admin for Masten Space Systems.
